Jayesh R. Kamath, MD PhD
Assistant Professor

Dr. Kamath has been an assistant professor of psychiatry at UConn Health Center and has been serving as a psychopharmacology consultant for the Connecticut Department of Correction for the past two and a half years. He is also an active member of the Cancer Supportive Care Editorial Board at the National Cancer Institute, NIH.
Dr. Kamath's major research interests involve investigation of the interactions between the psycho-neuro-endocrine-immunological systems and basic/clinical aspects of psychopharmacological management of psychiatric disorders. He is currently involved in clinical trials with established and investigational medications for the treatment of mood, anxiety and psychiatric disorders at the Neuropsychopharmacology Treatment, Research, and Training Center (NTRTC) in the Department of Psychiatry.
He has a particular interest in the biological and psychological risk factors for cancer-related depression/fatigue and is currently involved in a study investigating psychological distress and physiological markers associated with breast cancer diagnosis (Funded by CT breast health initiative). He is also involved in studies evaluating novel pharmacological and non-pharmacological treatments for cancer-related fatigue and depression. One of such studies with Dr. Andrew Winokur, involves investigation of thyrotropin-releasing hormone (TRH) as a treatment for cancer fatigue (Funded by Susan G. Komen Foundation). Another novel study plans to investigate omega 3 fatty acid supplements as a treatment of cancer-related depression (Funded by Donaghue foundation).
Another major interest of Dr. Kamath involves psychopharmacological management of psychiatric disorders in the correctional system. He is currently involved in an NIMH funded study investigating implementation of Texas medication algorithm (TIMA) for Bipolar Disorder in the correctional setting.
Dr. Kamath teaches third year medical student courses; supervises medical students and residents in the outpatient clinic, and co-ordinates quarterly educational seminars for psychiatric advanced clinical nurse practitioners in the correctional setting. He has received awards for his teaching abilities and research including a New Investigator Award from the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH)
